Being a teen is hard...

Trust us, we get it!
We recognize this and are mindful of the needs of this population. We have designed an interactive curriculum focused on issues relevant to teens and pre-teens. We focus on a variety of topics, including:

  • self-esteem
  • navigating friendships and relationships with others
  • facing your fears
  • goal-setting
  • sharing your story
  • community service
  • teamwork

We provide trained adult facilitators to help youth navigate their shared experiences. Middle and high school are a time of transition for everyone. We believe a holistic, strengths-based approach is needed to help families and youth navigate their teen years.

Where does our name come from?
In Sanskrit, the ancient language of yoga, "vikara" [vi-kar-a] means change or transformation. Yoga and the arts have been found to be a transformative process for participants. The African proverb, "It takes a village to raise a child," reflects on the communal spirit needed to raise great kids. We combined these two ideas to create Vikara Village. We believe the more caring and trusting adults a child can have in their life, the better they will be. Our trained facilitators love sharing their skills in storytelling, yoga and so much more with the youth in our program.

Dealing with stress is difficult. That's why we care about helping youth and their families learn and practice healthy coping skills, like creating art or doing yoga.
Stress is something we ALL encounter. It is part of the human experience. As humans, we sometimes experience an extreme stress that overwhelms our capacity to cope. Whether that's pressure to keep your grades up, a break-up with a partner or a family trauma, this stress can hinder how you function and interact with those around you. We refer to this as toxic stress.

At Vikara Village we believe everyone has or will experience toxic stress at some point in their lives. We also believe everyone has the ability to recover and heal from it.

We work within a framework that allows us the opportunity to help youth give a voice to the sadness, pain and distress they are experiencing through storytelling, movement and creation of art. We are helping youth develop healthy coping skills to better face stress they will experience in the future, while giving them a space to heal from their on-going everyday life stressors. We work diligently to create an environment where youth voices are heard and they take part in our program as active partners.
