What Is Interoception?

Sometimes, life experiences can make it hard to feel connected—to ourselves or to the world around us. When we’ve been through stress or trauma, we may feel out of sync, disconnected, or even numb. Our perceptions can become blurred, ignored, or suppressed as a way of coping or protecting ourselves. The spectrum of perception includes:

  • Exteroception – how we perceive stimuli from the outside world (e.g., light, sound, temperature)
  • Proprioception – our sense of body position in space without visual cues
  • Interoception – our awareness of internal body signals (e.g., heart rate, breath, tension)

“Interoception is the awareness of the condition of the body and its internal state,” says Trina Altman, author of Yoga Deconstructed: Movement Science Principles for Teaching.

Picking Up on Body Cues

Let’s break down what interoception actually means. It helps us recognize internal cues like:

  • Hunger or fullness
  • Changes in heart rate
  • Breathing shifts
  • Muscle tension or relaxation

However, many of us were taught to ignore these sensations. We were told to “sit still,” “stop fidgeting,” or disconnect from natural movement. This conditioning often continues into adulthood, weakening our ability to tune in to our internal state.

Even though many of these sensations come from the autonomic nervous system, meaning they happen automatically, we need to relearn how to listen to our bodies. As babies, we intuitively knew how—this skill just needs remembering, not inventing.

Improving Interoception with Mindfulness

Research shows that impaired interoception is linked with:

Research has shown that interventions highlighting interoception—like yoga, meditation, art, and mindful movement—can improve emotional well-being and reduce stress and anxiety.

How We Support Interoception at Vikara Village®

At Vikara Village®, we help participants strengthen interoception by offering safe, supportive spaces to explore their bodies through mindful movement. In our signature programs—Safe Space Yoga and Bold Heart Yoga—we encourage body awareness, safety, and confidence. By learning to notice physical sensations and connect them to internal states, participants begin to rebuild trust in their bodies and uncover a sense of agency from within.

Ready to deepen interoception and support trauma recovery? Safe Space Yoga®—our trauma-informed movement program at Vikara Village®—offers accessible practices that help individuals and communities reconnect with their bodies safely.
