What does it mean to have whole person health? The emotional side of maintaining your health

“Whole person health”

Having whole person health means taking into account more than one aspect of the body and lifestyle. It can mean considering what promotes or depletes mental and physical health. Not only does whole person health include looking at more than just one specific disease or area of the body but it includes the impact of factors outside the body such as one’s community, living space, environment, and relationships.

Someone who aims to have whole person health focuses on their physical well-being, emotional well-being, the strength of their relationships, and their resilience according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. It focuses on preventing chronic illness that can be developed through lifestyle choices such as having a poor diet, not exercising, being chronically stressed, and not sleeping well. Not only are these lifestyle factors important, but maintaining healthy emotional well-being has a direct effect on one’s whole person health.

Why is emotional well-being important?

Emotional well-being impacts physical, mental, and whole person health. Research has shown that having social support, being able to enhance personal strengths, and seeking/accessing financial assistance can increase emotional well-being and improve health/quality of life.
